Read Luke 9:57-62

This passage challenges our view of Jesus. Yes, he wants all people to follow him, but at the same time he loves us enough not to let us take shortcuts in our faith. In this passage, the same Jesus that loved each of us so much that he died for us, turns away three would be disciples. Challenging indeed!

  • What obstacles do you think prevented each of these people from following Jesus?

  • What challenges do you see in your life that might keep you from giving your all to Jesus?

  • What are some things that you have changed, given up, or began since you started studying the bible?

At first glance, it might seem like Jesus is being a little harsh. But, it’s all about perspective. If he’s calling us to an easy walk then his standards don’t need to be high. But we know that going with God is not a walk in the park, it’s an arduous but amazing journey, it’s even a battle sometimes. So the expectations must be high. Jesus isn’t being harsh, he’s just being honest.
